Chinese Ming Dynasty blue and white porcelain plate, center body well-painted in soft violet-blue tones with composit shade of cobalt-blue glazed, ripe Lychee abundant with foliate enclosed within double fine blue rings n a very white paste compromising the cavetto, before band of various Flowers blooms called Flowers of the Four Seasons. In the Chinese culture, specific flowers represent the seasons. winter: Plum Blossom, Spring: Peony, Summer: Lotus, Fall: Chrysanthemum. Scroling ruyi and vines decorated around the rim. The Lychee or Lichee is best known for its white juicy fruit from late summer; the flesh of the fruit surrounds a large, gnarled kernel. In art it symbolizes summer and a wish for children. The latter wish gives it a role in the marriage celebration. If lychees are combined with water chestnuts they symbolize cleverness: ling lì. The fruits are considered yang in traditional medicine and so are eaten to offset an excess of yin. All reserved against plain clean white underglaze ground. The underside left unglazed, with pale-creme base and grayish-creme firing spots.
