THE PORT OF LE HAVRE
Oil on mahogany plate.
52 x 66 cm.
Inscribed "Eugene Boudin.87" at lower left (first name somewhat unclear). At the back side old rubbed sticker.
The early phase of Impressionism is also expressed in the present painting: the painting offers a view of a wide canal tapering towards the back, with yachts and sailing ships moored on its lateral banks. Between the masts, the facades of the riverside buildings shine through. In the background a large warehouse with a gable roof. The painter has skilfully enlivened the slightly dull morning cloud atmosphere with a mast ship with chimney on the left and another smaller ship on the right, further back in stronger red-black tones. A typical feature of Boudin's painting technique is the fact that the white colour is applied as a final heightening in the individual sections of the painting, clearly visible, for example, in the brushstrokes of the shimmering water surface, even more clearly in the white front sails of the right-hand yacht or the white light spot under the red-and-black fireplace on the left of the picture. The painting is not yet included in the catalogue raisonné.
