Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875) called Boudin the King of Heaven, why is impressively clear in this painting. The picture shows Étretat on the coast of Normandy, which is located northeast of Le Havre. At that time Étretat was still a small fishing village with less than 1000 inhabitants. In the 1890s, Boudin was filled with creative energy and 1890 was a busy year for him because he had many orders and inquiries. And so he turned to his favourite subjects: the sea, the harbour and the beaches. In 1891 Boudin painted a total of four paintings depicting La Falaise d'Amont à Étretat (see Robert Schmit, nos. 2069-2072).
