Victor Gabriel Gilbert, 1847 Paris – 1935 ebenda
STREET SCENE WITH WEEK MARKET FROM OLD PARIS
Oil on wood.
42 x 55 cm.
Signed "Victor Gilbert" lower right.
In decorative gilded frame.
On a cobbled street, where two dogs are playing, a coachman with a light straw hat and blue jacket tries to carry his horse by horse-drawn carriage. He is observed by numerous passers-by standing in front of shops. In the background, the view is opened to other buildings of the city and other figures. On the left is a large shop with a display on which various fruits and vegetables are offered for sale in bright colours. The saleswoman in back view with a white apron is talking to a young woman who is wearing a little girl in a pink robe who is presented with an apple. An atmospheric reproduction of a street view, whereby the bright fruit, such as red strawberries, cherries, blue plums, orange-red apples and yellow lemons and tomatoes, are highlighted in colour compared to the picture, which is otherwise in beige-brown and grey tones.
