Gustave Courbet, 1819 Ornans – 1877 La Tour de Peilz
SOURCE DANS LES ROCHERS
Oil on canvas.
73.5 x 93 cm.
Signed "G. Courbet" lower left.
Enclosed is a copy of an expertise by Jean-Jacques Fernier dated 16 November 2009. According to Mr. Fernier the place depicted is la Grotte Sarrazine in the Ornans area, which is also depicted in another work by Courbet painted in 1864 (No F407 in Cat. Rais.).
The present painting can be dated to about 1872 - 1873, when Courbet was released from prison and went to Ornens, before he went into exile in Switzerland. The composition is illuminated at certain points by the last rays of the sun one day and thus effectively marks the source.
