PORT WITH APPLICATING STEAMERS AND SAILSHIPS
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
86 x 122 cm.
Signed "J. Maris" at lower right.
In typical brisk brushstroke Maris shows one of his favourite motifs. Besides summer dunes and polder landscapes he also painted harbour basins in pastose style. This probably refers to the port of Delft, as in a painting offered on 15 November 2011 at Christie's Amsterdam under lot 49, which resembles the present painting in brushstroke and colouring.
