Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A mold-formed faience pendant depicting Bes, the bandy-legged dwarf deity who protected the women and children of a household. Covered in turquoise-hued glaze, the figure stands nude atop bent, attenuated legs and displays his distended abdomen beneath raised arms. His head bears large eyes, an ovoid tongue protruding from his bushy mustache and beard, and his signature feathered crown; a suspension hole is drilled laterally through the crown.
