IM VARIETÉ IN PARIS
mixed technique with pencil and coloured chalk on paper.
24 x 31.5 (30.5) cm and 23 x 30 cm.
The first sheet inscribed and dated "Paris 1907", the second sheet inscribed "Farb.Stiftzeichnung im Varieté in Paris, Typen 1907" and estate stamp August Macke.
Each in passepartout, behind glass in a connected double frame.
IM VARIETÉ IN PARIS probably originates from the sketchbook 12 B (Ursula Heiderich, August Macke, Die Skizzenbücher, 2 Bde). It is a complete page, which was created during his trip to Paris in June 1907, which was made possible by the generous support of his patron Bernhard Koehler. During the four weeks in Paris he became acquainted with the works of the French Impressionists and Carrières and finally turned away from Böcklin's influence. Already in Paris, Macke decided to apprentice himself to one of the Berlin Secessionists and consequently entered Corinth's studio after his return to Berlin.
The charming, finely detailed drawing shows small sketches accentuated with bright colours, more or less elaborated: festively and extravagantly dressed spectators and artists in vaudeville, on the verso also a small park scenery. Macke captures the figures and faces with confident, pointed strokes.
One leaf trimmed at left margin, both leaves slightly browned.
