TWO PRESTIGIOUS HORSES IN THE STALL
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
63.5 x 76.5 cm.
Signed and dated "J.F.Herring senr. 1843" at lower left.
In gilded splendid frame.
In an old stable in front of a feeding corner standing the two horses, a white horse and a handsome brown one with white forehead spot. Around them, in the straw on the ground, a proud rooster and some hens, a pair of doves and a collie sniffing carefully at the lustre of the white horse, which is slightly inclined towards him. Through the open stable door, on whose frame an old lamp hangs, the view falls on high trees with autumnal foliage and a paddock with more horses. Atmospheric, high-quality representation of the horses with fine, shiny fur, facing each other.
