Counterparts are landscapes with Mediterranean-style figures, walking along the diagonals leading into the picture space. These are formed firstly by a path running parallel to a river flowing into an open body of water and secondly by a sand path, which is bathed in a pleasant light by the setting evening sun and leads passers-by past a ruin. Trained in Antwerp, the artist, born in Ypres, was known for his Spanish and Italian impressions. He worked on his specialty, perspective, in a treatise and became professor at the Brussels Academy of Art in 1855. Rest. Once with colour losses in lower right corner. (12205627) (13)
