East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely porcelain vessel with brass fittings painted with a repeating pattern of cobalt blue calligraphy characters. The pottery body rests on a ring foot with a brass band covering. The vessel is shaped like a double gourd, a style known as "hulu," the globular body supports a tall neck with a bulbous flare just above the base. A brass overlay with a beaded band covers the upper and interior part of the neck - this may have been part of a lamp at one point, the brass neck supporting a glass chimney.
