North America, Western United States, Wyoming, Kemmerer, Green River Formation, Eocene Period, ca. 56 to 33 million years ago. A fossilized Mioplosus fish with astounding preservation to both bone and soft tissue, contained in a limestone matrix. This fish was extracted from the famous fossil-bearing "18-inch layer," where the sediment is highly laminated, so fossils can be excavated nearly whole! The fish's body is fully extended and the texture from the scales is also captured in the orange hues surrounding the darker umber bones! Mioplosus is related to modern day perch, a solitary predator with sharp teeth for catching smaller fish- these tiny teeth are visible in the slightly parted mouth! Size (fossil): 7" L x 2" W (17.8 cm x 5.1 cm); (matrix): 14" L x 0.25" W x 11" H (35.6 cm x 0.6 cm x 27.9 cm) Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
