Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful textile fragment made from brightly dyed camelid (alpaca or llama) wool in hues of ochre yellow, red, mulberry purple, brown, dark blue-black, and white. The register of stepped motifs are not only fascinating interlocking geometric shapes, but upon further inspection they are also stylized animals in profile with a singular eye and nostril. This textile is mounted on a paper backing.
