Pre-Columbian, Northwestern Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya, Middle / Late Polychrome periods, ca. 800 to 1550 CE. A fine hand-built ceramic bowl and rattle resting on tripodal feet and decorated with painted polychrome details. A feline head projects from the front wall of the vessel, the bold forehead stripes suggest this is one of the smaller jungle cat species such as an ocelot or margay, with perked ears and wide eyes. Slits in the hollow cat head and legs emit the sounds from the clapper balls that are still contained within!
