North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A stunning, wheel-thrown pottery bowl used for serving couscous. This beautiful Fassi type vessel presents a ring-form foot, a rounded bottom, and thick walls that rise to a flared rim encircled by a brass ring. Glazed in hues of blue and white, the interior of the bowl is skillfully adorned with a central tondo of stylized astral and floral motifs surrounded by several borders of abstract geometric and arabesque designs. The Fez region is renowned for their Fassi pottery that uses cobalt blue pigments and their blend of Islamic, Spanish, and tribal Berber patterns. An annular drill hole pierces the foot, allowing for it to be suspended for storage or display.
