The eldest brother of Pu Xian (1901-1966), Pu Quan (1913-1991) and Pu Zuo (1918-2001, lot 803), Pu Jin was also the cousin of Pu Ru (1896-1963, lot 802). Until 1949 Pu Jin was the dean of the College of Art at Furen University. As indicated by the inscription on this scroll, Pu Jin was also a member of the Songfeng Huashe (Pine Wind Painting Society), a collective of artists established in 1925 that included his immediate family members, as well as his cousins Pu Ru and Qi Gong (1912-2005). The depiction of horses was a favorite theme for Pu Jin, and in 1931-2 he painted a copy of Gong Kai's (1222-1307) Emaciated Horse.
