He began his study in a traditional fashion, by practicing examples from the Jieziyuan Huazhuan (Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual from the age of 12, and by the age of 19 he was studying with Feng Chaoran (1881-1954). The artist painted the present scroll in 1982 at age 74, his career in a revived state and celebrating an exhibition of paintings in Hong Kong and the recent publications of his own paintings and painting theory.
