After 1949, his work continued in a Socialist Realist manner. In his later years, he turned to brush and ink, and his friendships with Qian Shoutie (1897-1967) and Zhu Qizhan (1892-1966) brought a calligraphic sensibility to his compositions. The two landscapes offered here, one painted in the artist's last year, reveal few traces of his early commercial roots.
