At 18 years he was admitted to the Sichuan School of Art and Technology and began his formal study with Pang Xunqin (1906-1985), who was introducing his students to the aesthetic approach of Matisse and Picasso, after Pang's recent studies in Europe. Together with Pang Xunqin, Shiy De-Jinn transferred to the National School of Arts in Chongqing where he studied with Zao Wou-Ki (1921-2013), Chu De-Chun (1920-2014) and Lin Fengmian (1900-1991). Relocating to Taiwan in 1948, Shiy De-Jinn traveled throughout the island, capturing the scenery with vivid and bold colors. The three paintings by Shiy De-Jinn in this sale exemplify his approach to painting in the 1950's, an important formative period for the artist. This lot and the two Shiy De-Jinn paintings that follow were purchased in Taiwan by Molly Haynes, a Foreign Affairs officer with the United States Department of State. Ms. Haynes served in United States embassies in Asia, Africa, The Middle East and Europe.
