He is a follower of the style of Wang Hui (1631-1717)'s landscape painting. In addition to painting, Zhang Shiyuan was also adept at calligraphy, connoisseurship, epigraphy, seal carving and painting restoration. He was revered by his contemporaries such as Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) and Zhu Qizhan (1892-1996).
