Wang, figures prominently in the discussion of the global understanding of Chinese painting in the 20th century. Learning technique from Gu Linshi (1865-1930) and Wu Hufan (1894-1968), the artist gained access to major collections in 1930's Shanghai, and he was involved in the selection of masterpieces from the Palace Museum collection exhibited in London in 1935. Relocating to the United States in 1949, he would settle in New York permanently after a period of teaching painting at the University of Hong Kong ending in 1966. The artist's paintings were celebrated in successive solo exhibitions in the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China into his 90's. In addition, C.C. Wang was also a remarkable collector, with many of the greatest masterpieces having passed through his hands.
