Studying European methods in Tokyo 1915-1920, he also lived in France from 1928-1931. In 1947 he went to the United States to teach traditional Chinese painting methods, lecturing at Harvard, Yale and Columbia Universities. He would not return to China for thirty-three years. Despite his early training in oil painting and his decades overseas, Wang Yachen gravitated back to traditional Chinese media, exemplified by the two paintings that compose this lot.
