He received a Bachelor's degree in Chinese painting from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1978 and moved to Shenzhen in 1984. The city, undergoing rapid development and bursting with urban vibrancy, witnessed Wang Chuan's representational style transition from realistic to abstract. A health problem forced the artist to move to the United States in 1997, and he began practicing Buddhism soon after. After moving back to China in 2002, the artist has been based mainly in Shenzhen and Beijing. His works are in the collections of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Norway National Art Museum, the Guangdong Art Museum, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art.
