He studied art under Liu Kuo-Sung at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and pursued his graduate program at Tunghai University, Taiwan. After he received his PhD degree in Art History from the Arizona State Univeristy, Lee became a post-doctoral fellow at the Phoenix Art Museum. He currently teaches at the National Taiwan Normal University. Inspired by the practices of Epigraphy, the use of seals in Chinese literati painting and possibly the contemporary visual culture of digital imaging, Lee carves sticks of soft woods with Chinese characters and stamps them repetitively at various strength to form grids of 'pixels' that reveal photographic images of traditional subjects, such as the blue-and-green landscape and the Wu Daozi style Heavenly King with exaggerated facial expressions.
