WILSON KA HO SHIEH (SHI JIAHAO, BORN 1970) Kintaro, 2010WILSON KA HO SHIEH (SHI JIAHAO, BORN 1970)Kintaro, 2010Ink, colored pencil and collage on archival paper, matted, framed and glazed, signed by the artist with a long inscription in Chinese and English, dated 2010, version 1 of 2, from the series The Cultural Life of Wilson Shieh. I studied Chinese painting in the university and focused on practicing gongbi (fine-brush ink painting) technique. By then I was not interested in traditional Japanese arts. When I looked at Ukiyo-e prints, I thought that the coloration was too loud, and the figures were exaggerated. They were kitschy crafts. When I started my artistic creation, I used traditional Chinese ink technique to depict modern subject matter. While I was visiting art museums around the world, I was attracted by their excellent collection of Ukiyo-e prints. I started to realize that my painting resembled the Ukiyo-e in many ways. In 2006, I was offered to work for a project at Singapore Tyler Print Institute. My working partner was a Japanese printer. When he looked at my work, he asked if I wanted to try making prints in Ukiyo-e style. Two years later the plan was realized. An Ukiyo-e woodblock carver Shoichi Kitamura, who lived in Kyoto of Japan, collaborated with me to complete a set of prints titled "Music Families." Kitamura gave me some samples of the "Chinese Zodiac" series copied from traditional Ukiyo-e as gift. For the year of Rooster, a legendary Japanese boy "Kintaro" is watching rooster fighting. I then found out many images of Kintaro with his mother "Yamauba" in the Ukiyo-e tradition. I love these pictures of mother and son. They are lively and funny. I think they should be introduced to mothers who have young boys.石家豪的文化生活(三十六歲,2006) The Culture Life of Wilson Shieh (age 36, 2006) 版本 Edition 1/2 2010 Provenance:Osage Gallery, Hong Kong來源:香港奥沙畫廊Wilson Shieh Ka Ho was born in Hong Kong, and in 2001 he graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Master's degree in Fine Arts. As documented in his inscription on this lot, his approach to art focuses on the traditional technique of gongbi (meticulous brush), where artists render minute details with fine brushstrokes. Here he utilizes colored pencil to illustrate a time in his aesthetic evolution. The M+ Collection in Hong Kong holds forty works from the artist, including the second edition (2 of 2) of Ukiyo-e Kintaro, 2010 , the present lot. In 2021 M+ exhibited the 16 works that compose his series, "The Cultural Life of Wilson Shieh (2010), from which this lot belongs.
